Sudhakar Babu wins
N.Sudhakar Babu of Indian Bank started with
three draws. That was when all thought that the oldest player of the meet
is going to struggle to make points in the midst of youthful champions and
the rising summer heat. But, in the fourth round, the second seed Babu
offered a draw which top seed R.R.Laxman declined. That was the turning
point for Sudhakar Babu. He beat Laxman and also went on to win the
tournament with a splendid 75% score.

of Kerala won the 1st Ranjit Patkar Memorial FIDE Rating tournament held
from May 2-9 at Karwar in North Karnataka. Ratnakaran scored eight points
from nine games to win the title with a better tie-break score than GM
Neelotpal Das of ONGC, Kolkata.

Asian Youth Chess Championship will be
held at Iran From 23rd June to 01st July 2006. All those desirous of
participating may kindly send Demand Draft favouring All India Chess
Federation, payable at Chennai for Rs.7500/- towards entry fee to be sent to
the organizers at Iran. The last date for receiving such entries will
be on or before 15th May 2006. No entry will be entertained after this date

Bountiful April For India
April 2006 was the most productive
month in terms of grandmaster additions for India. When the Elo
rating list was published on April 1, 2006 it was certain that
P.Magesh Chandran of Madurai became India's twelfth grandmaster
