FIDE World Beats Azerbaijan Easily In Baku

Led by Viswanathan Anand and Vladimir Kramnik the FIDE World Team scored an easy 21.5-10.5 win over Azerbaijan in a four a team eight round rapid match that took place from May 7-9 at Baku.

World champion Viswanathan Anand scored three wins and drew five to end on 5.5/8 and help his team win with relative ease. Former world champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia playing for the world team scored 6.5/8 and was impressive. Both remained undefeated. For the world team, other two scorers were Sergey Karjakin of Ukraine who made 5/8 and Alexei Shirov who scored 4.5/8. Both of them lost one game apiece.

At the losing end of the Scheveningen format was Azerbaijan. For them Radjabov scored 4/8, Mamedyarov 3/8, Vugar Gashimov 2/8, Gadir Gashimov 1/6 and Rauf Mamedov 0.5/2. Azerbaijan started with a stunning 2.5-1.5 win in round one but lost the remaining seven rounds.
