Petr Kostenko in sole lead

New Delhi (15 Jan 09 ) : Kazakh Grandmaster Petr Kostenko defeated Grandmaster Safin Shukhrat in the sixth round and emerged as the sole leader in the ongoing 7th Parsvnath International Chess Tournament here at Modern School on today. With his sixth victory on the trot, Kostenko remains the only player in the field having won all games in the event so far and is now trailed by a pack of five players including local hopeful Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi. Playing black side of Ruy Lopez game, Negi failed to produce a decisive result and signed the peace treaty against Russian grandmaster Mikhil Ulibin in 31 moves on top board.

The upset galore continued for another round and second seed Ukrainian Grandmaster Yuriy Kuzubov joined the casualty list in the sixth round. International Master P Karthikeyan played a finely crafted game to come out triumphs against Yuriy and take his tally to 5.5 points. Meanwhile top seed Alexander Areshchenko got another set back to his title contention as International Master Prathmesh Mokal held the Ukrainian grandmaster to a creditable draw.

Roktim Banyopadhyay defeated American International Master Justin Sarkar while talented youngster SP Sethuraman got better of seasoned campaigner Atanu Lahiri in the sixth round. With 5.5 points in the kitty, Roktim and Sethu now trail behind Kostenko along with Negi, Ulibin and Karthikeyan. Just four rounds remain in this Rs. 11.5 lakhs prize money tournament.
