Vellammal School Honours their Asian Heros
The
Velammal Matriculation Higher
Secondary School today (01st
August, 2008 ) honoured seven of their students, who returned with a rich
haul of medals in various age groups in the Asian Junior Chess
championship at Teheran last month. Those honoured with awards were
Gold medallists P Uthra (12th Standard
) and M. Mahalakshmi (fifth standard), silver medallist
International Master (IM) B Adhiban
(11th standard), IM M
Shyamsundar (11th standard) and Woman IM Mohana Priya (tenth standard),
both finished fourth in the tournament. The school management
represented by Velammal
Group Chairman M V
Muthuramalingam, School Correspondent MVM Velmohan
and Principal P Prabakaran
also honoured IM P Sethuraman (11th
standard) for finishing fifth and RA.Pradeep Kumar (12th standard) for
representing India in the prestigious event.
The
young players were given cash award of Rs 50,000 each, while
M.Mahalakshmi was given an additional educational scholarship
of Rs 60,000. All India Chess Federation Secretary D V Sundar, Tamil
Nadu State Chess Assocaition President P R Venkatrama Raja and Vice
President J C D Prabhakaran lauded the efforts of the young students in
bringing laurels to Tamil Nadu and India.
Mr Raja spoke about Vellamal's quest for excellence and hoped that some of
the players from this group of seven would become among the top ten in the
next five years.
Mr Sundar hailed Mahalakshmi as the teenage prodigy for winning the
under-10 title in Teheran and said more feats could be expected from her
in the future
