Humpy In Round Three

Humpy In Round Three

By Arvind Aaron

Koneru Humpy, the highest rated player in the World Women's Chess Championship at Nalchik, Russia moved up into the third round after she received a walkover in round two. This is however not good for her playing rhythm as walkovers keep you less warm and others tend to have an edge. There is huge expectation from Humpy this time to win the championship.

The other Indian, Dronavalli Harika played a quiet draw with the white pieces in a bishop ending after 30 moves. She had to play the reverse game with the black colour to try and defeat higher rated Anna Muzychuk in round two.

In a major upset, Russia's Svetlana Matveeva shocked the world women's champion Xu Yuhua of China when she won a knight and a subsequent queen ending. Xu Yuhua should win with white in the reverse game to stay in the tournament.

The World Women's Championship started with 64 players and now 32 are in the fray in round two. The winner will be known on Sep 17.
