Dronavalli Harika of Guntur, won the second rapid chess game to defeat
higher rated Anna Muzychuk (Slo) by 1-1 in classical chess, and 1.5-0.5 in
rapid chess in round two of the World Women's Chess Championship at
Nalchik, Russia on September 3, 2008.
With her win, India has two players in the last 16. As mentioned already,
Koneru Humpy got a bye in round two to get to round three. The world
women's champion will be crowned on September 17, 2008.
In the first tie-break game, they followed the classical game where Harika
drew with comfort. In the tie-break game, Muzychuk won a pawn but Harika
had a good blockade in place to draw the queen and rook ending.
In the all important decisive rapid chess encounter, Harika won with the
white pieces from an English opening. The game went to the wire and Harika
who had won two pawns took 90 moves to win the opposite colour bishop
ending.
